Jeff Gompertz has worked under various aliases during his career including Fakeshop, which he formed as a collective in 1997. Fakeshop instigated many local and international projects in the early days of .net art experimentation and was included in the Whitney Biennial and Ars electronica in 1999. Observation and voyeurism are a continuing thread, with CCTV systems, chatrooms, and webcams recurring in various iterations.
He designed and built the capsule hotel for ‘We live in Public’, summarized in Wikipedia as a “surveillance-as-art project which exposes the problems of privacy in the internet age” *”The pièce de résistance was a Japanese-style capsule hotel outfitted with cameras in every pod, and screens that allowed each occupant to monitor the other pods installed in the basement by artist Jeff Gompertz, co-founder of the media art group Fakeshop“. The project is considered predictive of the social norm of self publication, a showing off of what was once considered to be in the private realm
His work has been exhibited internationally, including the Whitney Biennial (USA), Ars Electronica (EU) ARCO/EU, and Japan Foundation (JP).
