Fakeshop – Twin
Twin Capsule passageways:
One passageway with a facsimile capsule hotel environment and video display of live signal generated from a built–in network of surveillance cameras.
One passageway with video display of remote streamed signal from an actual Japanese capsule hotel surveillance system.
Both passageways/corridors are constructed of standard building material and create a tunnel-like atmosphere.
Video rear projection is elaborately designed to create a powerful sense of place from all surveilled locations. Included below is a preliminary sketch/layout of the twin passageways.
Subject matter:
Capsule hotel is a symbolic structure, which is lodged in the global brain. As a metaphorical place, this architectural phenomenon inevitably points to a discussion of the ‘modular human’, the global salaryman stored efficiently overnite and delivered for work the next day.
Here we are laying out an infor- mation and display system toward the definition of a new human passenger in a global transportation and packaging system. Whether or not a human should or should not be compartmentalized and stored for the convenience of business and enterprise, this piece does not take a position either way, It is neutral on the subject.
Along a parallel line of thought, the capsule location becomes the site for musing on the subject of doubling/mirroring/twinning, as the twin passageways become a performative space to explore a relationship between the one capsule location and its fake double. A live performance action will take place at the opening and at selected times during the installations’ duration, according to budget and other considerations.
A technical and structural diagram will be created closer to production time, as well as a full performance description.
